As you begin painting your home, your first question may be, “how much interior paint do I need?” For spaces that range from 1,000 to 4,000 sq.ft., the average indoor painting cost ranges from $3,000 to $16,000. The average house size is 2,500 sq.ft. A gallon of paint can cover around 400 sq.ft., which is approximately the size of an average living room.
I’m going to leave you with a few hints and tips that I’ve picked up in this project and will use on all the next paint projects I tackle:
.

An average range for exterior house painting costs is between $1.50 and $4 per sq.ft. and can be higher or lower depending on your location and the condition of your home. For the average 2,500 square foot home, you can expect to pay between $3,750 and $9,750.
In the video below we painted this two story approximately 3000 square feet stucco house for $3400. The price included premium Dunn Edwards paint Spartashiled. Prior to painting we fixed cracks and holes, replaced wood trim around one of the doors and spray painted entire house including metal railing on the second floor balcony using the same color and sheen. The cost of this paint project to the homeowner was $1.13 per square foot.
Your home interior can withstand it for a long while with the right paint, though. Cheaper paints will be more prone to peeling.
Completely cover the roller with paint before beginningRemove all excess paint to avoid dripsUsing the roller to apply paint, follow the same pattern throughout. The most common pattern is in the shape of a “W” or “M”. Without lifting the roller, fill in the un-painted areas.Once you’ve painted the area completely, carefully pick up the roller so it does not leave a mark. Reapply the paint on your roller, move to another unpainted area and repeat the process.
Several individual factors impact the overall cost of your painting project, including how many coats of paint you need and the type of paint you are using. As you may have guessed, higher quality paints cost more, but that is not the only thing that affects how much it costs. If you’re planning on going from a light color to a dark color or especially a dark color to a light color, it’s going to take a bit more work and money. Older homes require more prep work, often including drywall 4 or siding repairs.
If caulking & priming takes place the same day, moisture will be trapped underneath, again harming the life of the products used, which waiting 24-48 hours allows everything to dry back out.
Lastly, some larger apartment complexes require proof of insurance and workers comp to work in the building along with adding the association as “additionally insured”. It’s always a good idea to check if your building has any requirements or detailed work procedures before hiring a painting company.
Few things say 'welcome to our home' quite like the front door. Over time, a front door gets exposed to the normal wear and tear of the elements and needs to be refinished. Hiring a painting contractor to save the wood by refinishing it can be a better option in the...
The first step to finding a local painting contractor is going to your favorite search engine. With the overwhelming amount of information on the Internet, you’ll be able to find the best results directly on a search engine, rather than on a specific site or by looking in the classifieds.
If you do decide to make it a full-time business, the sky’s the limit. The house flipper/contractor that I worked for billed clients $35 per hour for painting, and paid his best painters perhaps half of that, so there is room for some profit there. Consider the case of Matt Shoup, who started with $100 and went door-to-door, asking neighbors if they needed some painting done, then built a painting business that earns $2.5 million per year!
A BIG shout-out to Josh Douglas of A Painter's Touch. He just finished painting the exterior of my house, and I am so pleased. He is neat, thorough, very fair in his pricing, and HONEST.
It’s just about impossible to keep your floors free of paint drops. But a good canvas or cotton drop cloth will do a better job than plastic sheets. Paint drops stay wet after they fall on plastic and you can track a single drop all around your house. Cloth drop sheets also stay in place better, they aren’t as slippery as plastic and they are safer for ladders.
