Neutrals like white don’t have to be one-note. Pick a shade with undertones that match the rest of your exterior color scheme. On this home, white siding with blue undertones melds gracefully with a bright blue front door and powder-blue porch furniture and pendant light. Each color in the trio is distinct, but their commonalities create perfect harmony. House Paint Color

Using three colors is a general rule of thumb for selecting an exterior color scheme. Most homeowners assume those hues have to be distinctly different, but this monochromatic house proves otherwise. Here, light gray is the dominant color, while a medium tone accents the wood archway over the front door. A deeper shade of gray around the windows and doors supplies the final accent. You might not think of this blush pink, which has a hint of apricot, as a neutral color, but Ashley Banbury, senior color designer for HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams tells us that the definition of neutral is changing from the shades we’re used to. “Our view on neutrals has expanded outside the typical gray and beige, and we have begun to embrace colorful shades that are soft and welcoming,” she says. If your home is surrounded by a natural landscape, you can take one of two approaches to exterior paint color ideas. First, you can pick hues that will make the home recede into the background of trees and plants. Or you can choose a standout color that calls attention to the style of your space. This home does the latter; its seafoam green exterior wood paint selection stands in contrast to the lush green backdrop of the tree canopy. When it comes to pastel shades, white is a successful accent color that adds contrast without being too jarring. Denver House Paint Color

Without a doubt, it's a look that rarely goes wrong. When you have a traditionally styled home with plenty of trim and other details, you best serve that home aesthetically when you increase the contrast between the trim and the field color. For the broad white trim of this new-construction home, Illinois-based JB Architecture wisely shaded down the field color's gray to emphasize its difference from the white trim. Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore gets the vote of interior designer Ariel Okin, based in New York City. "Gray Owl is a beautiful true gray through and through. It's not too green and not too blue, and it hits the right balance between warm and cool," she says. "I particularly like it in bedrooms for a clean and monochromatic palette of creams and grays." Because it typically covers the most surface area on a home, siding will often provide the foundation color for your exterior scheme. Consider the undertones of your siding color, and choose two or three other shades that complement the hue. The gray siding on this home, for example, has strong blue undertones, which are highlighted by the turquoise front door and patio furniture. White trim stands out brightly against the cool exterior colors. House Paint Color Denver

The bottom line is that painting your home is probably the fastest and most affordable route to giving the exterior a big refresh. Before you break out the paintbrush, however, be sure to consider the style of the home, your specific neighborhood location and any architectural features that will drive the new look. Finally, just don’t lose sight of your personal style preferences in the process! Denver House Paint Color
This style of home has been called the “architectural stepchild” because it has been so disrespected over time, but it is actually very popular and offers great opportunities for upgraded curb appeal. With more people trying to age in place, the ranch home is a very livable, longer-term option so using paint to update what is sometimes considered a “cookie-cutter” look is easy and effective. Painting dated elements like red brick and updating elements like shutters and other accents are very effective. With regard to the range of colors that is appropriate, it is wide and varied. Earthy beige coats most of this home's facade, but a fire-engine red front door bucks the trend. If you're looking to quickly switch up your exterior color scheme, a new front door color is one of the easiest makeover ideas. When working with an existing color palette, consider the undertones and color family already used within the facade. For example, this slightly cooler red, rather than one that leans orange, plays nicely with the cool undertones of the beige brick and siding. House Paint Color Denver CO
Field and forest colors perfectly suit a Craftsman-style home. Shutters painted forest green are dark enough to be seen against the rusty brown exterior. White paint brings the porch walls and columns out of the roof's shadow and also handily highlights green shutters and a front door stained to match the home's siding. Before choosing your outdoor paint palette, research exterior paint schemes associated with your home's architectural style. House Paint Color Denver CO

Paintzen color expert Kristen Chuber shares her top paint color: Chalky Blue by PPG Porter Paints. "Somewhere between blue and gray, this velvety shade can actually be used as a neutral. It looks beautiful with bright white trim, but maybe even more impactful with rich, black accents. We have also seen this shade used beautifully in a monochromatic palette, alongside other shades of blue-gray, both on the lighter and darker side of the spectrum." Try using this hue in your kitchen, one of your bathrooms, or in the bedroom. This historic Victorian does color right! Three shades of green, with olive on the main-level siding, celery on the upper-level siding, and ivy accents on trim, windows, and gables, produce an easy-going yet multifaceted backdrop for bolder terra-cotta accents and cream architectural details. Prefer a mostly monochromatic look? Choose the darkest, the lightest, and a midtone color showcased on one paint-chip strip as your palette's primary players. Denver House Paint Color
Protect wood fences and deck with exterior stains and wood sealers. A few coats can keep your deck vibrant, healthy and looking great for years. Or, go for more of a restore by treating your deck to new colors or texture with deck paint. Remember, cleaning is an essential part of the project. It will stop premature peeling and make your exterior paint last longer. Pro tip: Take at least as much time to prep as you will for painting.  Denver House Paint Color
Blue is one of the most popular accent colors for bedrooms and living rooms. Choose an accent color that’s simple yet bold enough to make a colorful statement in the right room. Bright reds like tulip and chili pepper are popular choices for smaller rooms like libraries, closets or pantries. Refreshing oranges like basketball and papaya liven up kitchens and statement walls. And, greens can bring a calm to sitting rooms.

You can add interest to an exterior color scheme without using brightly colored paint colors. An all-neutral palette looks particularly polished when accented with hits of black. To give your beige exterior a more sophisticated feel, try painting the shutters and front door black. Use white on the trim and other exterior elements so the look is crisp and clean instead of one-note. House Paint Color Denver

If your dream is a white farmhouse-style home, follow the lead of Wendy Durnwald of the lifestyle blog, Life on the Shady Grove. For her "pretend farmhouse," as she puts it, Wendy sought out an elegant white that would steer clear of sterile and dull. After all, for an active property filled with five children and many sheep, things are not boring at all. She chose a soft, warm, and rich white exterior paint color: Sherwin-Williams Roman Column.

Monochromatic colors on the wheel are one basic color (hue), but have different values — lightness (tints) or darkness (shades). A dramatic and bold way to use the monochromatic paint trend is to paint your home all black. While contrasting siding and trim colors is typical, choosing monochromatic — especially black or gray with a darker or glossier black for the trim — really enhances the architectural and structural features of the home. Be careful when choosing your exterior paint colors in the store because they may appear lighter on the home exterior than on the paint chip in the store because of the natural lighting. Gray continues to top the list of popular paint colors for homeowners, and for a good reason. Whether cool, warm, light, or bold, grays of all tones and intensities provide a fresh backdrop for decor and coordinate beautifully with tile, countertops, furnishings, and art. Although this crisp neutral is highly versatile, gray is one of the most challenging colors to select due to its shifting undertones and sensitivity to natural light levels. Going gray seems simple enough at the outset, but sample paint chips and the finished result often vary greatly. Sometimes previously unseen, warm, cool, green, or blue tones can surface after gray paint is on the wall. To help you choose the ideal gray paint color for your space, take these essential factors into consideration. House Paint Color Denver CO

In some ways, red is actually a traditional color choice: Think red barns and brick homes. One thing is for sure and that is that red is an energetic color, however it also signals warmth and comfort. These are both qualities that are desirable in a home, so don’t hesitate to paint your home red. Of course, we’re not talking lipstick red. There are many shades of red, ranging from those with a rusty brown undertone to hues that tend more toward orange. House Paint Color Denver CO

White exteriors remain popular for their pristine appearance and go-with-anything properties. This farmhouse takes a flashy turn, thanks to calypso-style accent hues. Aquamarine shutters beautifully frame the windows, while a tangerine-color door moves to center stage. For a balanced exterior color combination, choose three tones for your home's exterior: a neutral hue for the body, a notable accent color for trim and shutters, and a punchy color for the door to draw attention. Light and easy warm greens, yellows and blues can make your home appear larger. Using the warmer tints of color themes with a simple white trim visually brings the home closer to the curb to make your home stand out in your neighborhood. Once you’ve selected a basic color, it’s easy to create many different and warmer versions within the same family. All you need to do is combine that color with a neutral in order to make it warmer or cooler, lighter or darker. This is known as tint and shade. Tint is lightening a color by adding white. Shade is darkening a color by adding black. Check out this resource on how to choose paint colors.

Such a great and useful post. When my husband and I bought out first house (we’re now on #5), we instinctively (but not deliberately) worked our entire decor around a wallpaper we fell in love with (and used in our entry/hallway). In our second house, we didn’t do that and everything always felt kind of disjointed. We finally figured out why it’s important to have a starting point and to consider how things will work together. Not that everything should be matchy matchy but everything should feel cohesive. My only exception is bedrooms – especially when you want to give kids a say in their spaces. I am so enjoying all of your new house updates and can’t wait to see how it’s all come together at the end. Denver House Paint Color

Saturated jade green shutters punctuate the elegant facade with jewel-tone richness.
