"There are a small number of timeless and classic shades we always find ourselves coming back to when searching for the perfect neutral," says Alicia Weaver of Alicia Weaver Design. "Alaskan Husky by Benjamin Moore is one of them. It is a classic shade of gray that complements accent colors." Light silvery grays work beautifully in guest bedrooms and in front entryways.

For another bold option, Seattle interior designer LeeAnn Baker suggests Benjamin Moore's Cheating Heart. "This is such a dramatic color that reads as a soft black and sometimes gets confused as a navy," she says. "It works wonderfully as a soft backdrop and really is dramatic when used on cabinetry. I have used it in kitchens, bathrooms, and offices. It is the perfect neutral dark gray for any space."
This historic Victorian does color right! Three shades of green, with olive on the main-level siding, celery on the upper-level siding, and ivy accents on trim, windows, and gables, produce an easy-going yet multifaceted backdrop for bolder terra-cotta accents and cream architectural details. Prefer a mostly monochromatic look? Choose the darkest, the lightest, and a midtone color showcased on one paint-chip strip as your palette's primary players. Denver House Paint Color
This just in—Sherwin-Williams, the widely trusted paint company, has revealed its annual Colormix Forecast for 2021. “Before we start working on the forecast, each one of us has spent months researching and gathering inspiration around color, design, and pop culture trends across the world,” Sue Wadden, the brand’s director of color marketing, explains to AD PRO of her team’s process. While the end results are different every year, the prediction for 2021 consists of 40 distinct paint shades across four color palettes: Sanctuary, Encounter, Continuum, and Tapestry. I have a confession to make…I am obsessed with stripes. Stripes of ALL kinds! Vertical, horizontal, diagonal, bursting, zigzag (chevron), backwards, forwards, upside down… You get the idea, right? I know, I know. Stripes have been around for ever, they’re totally “in”, they’re SO yesterday… blah, blah, blah. EVERYONE has their take on “stripes.” Particularly… House Paint Color Denver CO

Without a doubt, it's a look that rarely goes wrong. When you have a traditionally styled home with plenty of trim and other details, you best serve that home aesthetically when you increase the contrast between the trim and the field color. For the broad white trim of this new-construction home, Illinois-based JB Architecture wisely shaded down the field color's gray to emphasize its difference from the white trim.
The word sanctuary likely resonates with many individuals nowadays, in light of the ongoing global pandemic. The hues included in this palette are inspired by nature and biophilia, as well as the concept of nesting and the paler tones that are often associated with Scandinavian design. For instance, the quietness of Pure White (SW 7005) is designed to encourage slowing down and taking respite, while Oakmoss (SW 6180) and Urbane Bronze (SW 7048) are warm and inviting. “The Sanctuary palette is about being rooted in peace, so it’s the ideal palette to help create a safe haven at home,” Wadden notes. “During this unprecedented time, less is more. We’re experiencing a pause that’s called us to be mindful of how we’re living.” House Paint Color Denver CO
If you're designing a space around existing furniture and flooring materials, these elements can draw out hidden colors, too. To ensure a successful result, coordinate gray paint undertones to your interior finishings, suggests Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. "It's important to consider whether the decor in the room is mostly warm or cool, and match the undertones accordingly," she says. House Paint Color Denver

Such a great and useful post. When my husband and I bought out first house (we’re now on #5), we instinctively (but not deliberately) worked our entire decor around a wallpaper we fell in love with (and used in our entry/hallway). In our second house, we didn’t do that and everything always felt kind of disjointed. We finally figured out why it’s important to have a starting point and to consider how things will work together. Not that everything should be matchy matchy but everything should feel cohesive. My only exception is bedrooms – especially when you want to give kids a say in their spaces. I am so enjoying all of your new house updates and can’t wait to see how it’s all come together at the end. Denver House Paint Color

Red and blue is a classic exterior color combination that looks good all year. Traditional in all facets, this home's rich red brick exterior will stop you in your tracks. Shutters painted deep navy blue match the front door and frame the windows without stealing the show. Bright white trim makes a grand appearance around the entry and on the picture-perfect picket fence. This all-American house exterior will never go out of style. House Paint Color Denver CO
Cottage-style homes are amenable to an exterior color scheme that's less bounded by formal rules and freer to experiment with whimsical approaches to shade and pattern. Here, the first impulse might be to paint the section of the front facade above the door line the same color as the bottom half. But instead, the natural wood, which will weather to a warm gray if left unstained, adds warmth to the gray-green paint. For contrast, bright robin's-egg blue accents the front door. What ties these three disparate tones together is the white trim around the door, pillars, and rails. Denver House Paint Color

Wadden selected this color as a favorite, too, stating that Agreeable Gray is Sherwin-Williams's most popular color. "It's the perfect hue for any living space, whether it be a family room or bedroom, as it acts as a neutral backdrop," she says. "This gray is less cool than others, which bodes well for the resurgence of warmer hues and beiges that we're seeing." House Paint Color Denver CO

It's OK to pick just one element that stands out in your exterior color scheme; more often than not, that's the front door. The reason is aesthetic as well as practical: A bright front door hue such as this red signals visitors where to enter. On this house, the bulk of the color (warm gray) helps the low-slung profile gently recede into the landscape. House Paint Color Denver CO
While there isn’t one standout color, the earthy hues of Rosemary (SW 6187) and Reddened Earth (SW 6053) in the Encounter palette are more personal, in a nod to the potential for connection in one’s surroundings. Java (SW 6090), for instance, can bring to mind images of coffee (a necessity during the shutdown, with cold brews and whipped coffee seemingly in the news more than ever). The color is also a much richer shade of brown than Sandbank (SW 6052) and Canyon Clay (SW 6054), two paints from the Sherwin-Williams 2020 Colormix. House Paint Color Denver CO

Knowing that I wanted to create a comfortable, casual, inviting home and using the vintage rug I bought at a consignment store years ago (and have loved since the moment I first laid eyes on it), I selected this Colors of Historic Charleston paint color collection by Duron Paints for Sherwin Williams. And from there, I found my exterior house color (State Street Pink), my kitchen island color (Hurricane Blue) as well as the paint colors I plan to use in the library/media room (Hunley) and my husband’s office (Tradd Street Green).
Midcentury Modern (MCM) homes are super hot right now and millennial buyers love them for their retro flair, great floor plans and distinctive look. And, while you want a paint job to enhance the curb appeal of your home, the last thing you want to do is hurt the resale value or diminish its appeal. Light colors or earth tones are the classic choices for MCM homes, but actually the range of options is wide open, assuming that you don’t cover up or eliminate classic features like wood, stone or concrete blocks. Like an artist coordinating all elements of a painting, a house color consultant draws in many aspects of a home before choosing the final colors. Designer and color consultant Kimberly Laten, from Color Design LLC, expertly gauged the tan intensity of this Arizona home's stucco exterior based on many factors, including the dazzling blue desert sky and white clouds, lush green lawn, and earthy olive-green succulents.
When you have a gorgeous, sprawling Craftsman style home set in the woods, you'll want an exterior paint color that works with, not against, your surroundings. The green color of this sustainable home, from Asheville architects ACM Design PA, works in perfect harmony with the lush surrounding trees as well as with the manufactured stone veneer apron and crisp white trim.
Green and brown naturally associate, but when green takes a turn toward yellow, the pairing pleasantly surprises. Chartreuse trim stands out as a high-energy counterpoint to rustic stone walls and earthen siding and firmly links the home to like-colored garden plantings. When looking for exterior paint ideas, take your cue from exterior features that can’t be changed. Consider your home's roofing, stonework, and landscape to help narrow your color choices. Paintzen color expert Kristen Chuber shares her top paint color: Chalky Blue by PPG Porter Paints. "Somewhere between blue and gray, this velvety shade can actually be used as a neutral. It looks beautiful with bright white trim, but maybe even more impactful with rich, black accents. We have also seen this shade used beautifully in a monochromatic palette, alongside other shades of blue-gray, both on the lighter and darker side of the spectrum." Try using this hue in your kitchen, one of your bathrooms, or in the bedroom. Repose Gray is a light medium gray that doesn’t read brown or muddy. When testing Repose myself, I noticed a variety of undertones at different points in the day. That said, Repose Gray is reflective and does have a tendency to pick up shades around it. As the paint began to dry I saw a very light purple undertone shine through but more often I see a slight soft green cast.  House Paint Color Denver CO

By itself, steely gray can be a sterile choice for exterior house color combinations. But if this cool-minded hue tops your preferred color list, consider warming it up. That can be done in a number of ways, such as a bright accent color like orange that's on the warm end of the color scheme. A contrasting material, such as wood, can also be a good choice, particularly when stained a medium to dark color. In this contemporary scheme, a rich gray provides a good bridge between the two hues. House Paint Color Denver CO

Add a little feng shui energy to your living space with an orange paint color. "According to practitioners orange and red colors lend happiness to a room, which of course makes things feel more welcoming and inviting," says New York City architect, John Mochelle. "The Spruce Best Home Sundream is more of a warm beige but lives in the orange family. It is subtle enough for all four walls but still sufficiently sweet to evoke positive vibes."

It’s quite a well known fact that the paint colors you choose for a room will impact how you feel when you spend time in the space. But many don’t realize that the same fact applies to the exterior of your house as well. A neighborhood filled with beige nondescript houses isn’t very appealing for the eye. They don’t have that calming sense of home like a white farmhouse would give. While many might advise you to choose beige because it’s neutral, be encouraged to be bold instead.

Materials used on a home's exterior often supply a built-in base for a color scheme. For example, brick exteriors tend to take on a warmer, red hue. The question then becomes what to do about the accents. This limestone facade offers a base that's in tune with both the home's architecture and the natural landscape. To keep the color vibe low-key and minimalist, shutters and windows were painted a neutral yellow shade that nearly blends in with the stonework. For a bit of warmth and as an accent, a medium-tone stain warms the front door.

White remains popular for exterior color schemes for good reason. It works well with a variety of home styles, it minimizes the imposing facades of very large homes, and it allows the landscape to stand out with its texture and color variation. However, as with other colors, there are nuances in the brightness and lightness of even white. Test out several swatches in various shades of white, and view them at different times of day (when the sun hits and when it doesn't) to see how the hue varies. House Paint Color Denver CO
Selecting from a nearly endless parade of exterior paint color ideas can be overwhelming, and the very act of exterior home painting is a big job. Follow these tips for choosing exterior paint colors that go together so you can be confident as you undertake your painting project. With a little know-how, you can create a color scheme that suits your home's architecture and style and reflects your tastes.

At brick&batten we have curated 16 of the best paint colors for your home’s exterior in 2020. Painting your home’s exterior can be quite a task… but if done correctly it can elevate your curb appeal without cutting into walls or backing a huge dumpster into your driveway for months! What I mean by done correctly is finding the perfect color and a reputable contractor to get the work done!

Before you begin choosing the right house color, start out with helpful resources. With a home color visualizing tool, it’s important to get the basics right. For instance, consider the size of your home when planning on painting its exterior. The size can influence whether dark or light colors are more appropriate. As a general rule of thumb, light colors will make your house appear larger and will be more affected by different light conditions, whereas dark shades can make your property appear smaller and help it blend with the surroundings. You might not think of this blush pink, which has a hint of apricot, as a neutral color, but Ashley Banbury, senior color designer for HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams tells us that the definition of neutral is changing from the shades we’re used to. “Our view on neutrals has expanded outside the typical gray and beige, and we have begun to embrace colorful shades that are soft and welcoming,” she says.
