Painting the interior of your home is a great way to revitalize your space and give it a fresh new look. People paint their interiors to revive tired or dirty walls, match a new interior design, brighten a dark room, or visually change the scope of the area. Because many interiors follow what is known as a “color story”, or a cohesive color design throughout the home, it’s not uncommon to paint the entirety of a home interior at one time.
The paint itself is another factor that will affect price, but you can calculate how much. There are different price points for paint depending on the brand of your choice, so make sure you choose one that’s one your price range. When you go to the hardware store, let the staff know what your budget is and they will help you find the right brand to suit your needs. We love classics in an old home. A crisp, fresh white in an old home looks anything but boring. In fact, it can help beautiful trim work stand out more. We also like using classic accent colors to bring out detail work or lines on porches, eaves and gables. The right charcoal grey on the exterior of an old home can update it from shabby to stately. And updating that avocado green to a more modern sage can bring new life into an old washroom.
Older homes often have surfaces that newer homes don’t. Plaster walls, exposed brick, wood paneling and exterior architectural blocks are common in older homes. Using the right paint and tools on these surfaces (plus the right paint and tools for the room itself) is important to ensure the longevity of the project.
9″ inches is standard and what we used, but there are bigger rollers available. If you haven’t painted before I’d recommend sticking with a standard-sized roller & roller frame.
While prepping your home for painting, you may find bigger issues than just aged paint, such as mold or toxic lead paint. The company you hire to paint might be able to handle problems like these for you, or you may need to find a specialist to remove the harmful substance.
Using our paint calculation formula, 5 gallons of paint should be sufficient to cover 2,000 square feet.
Set the tone of the space: Over time, your needs for various rooms in your house change. What used to be a nursery might now be a teenager’s room, or what was once an office might now be a play room. In addition to changing out the furniture, give the room a new coat of paint to set the tone. Changing that light pink nursery to bright blue will feel much more appropriate for a teenager’s bedroom.

Priming is also necessary if you are switching paint types, such as going from a latex paint to an oil-based paint. In most cases, you should use the same type of primer as the type of paint that you are using. For example, if you are using an oil-based paint, then an oil-based primer is needed.
